The Sierra 1500 is also the only vehicle in this group with the published headline towing configuration. That maximum belongs to a specific build described below, not every diesel Sierra 1500.

GMC Yukon

The GMC Yukon offers the 3.0L Duramax inline-six. It gives full-size SUV buyers a diesel choice with the same 305-horsepower and 495-lb-ft output listed for the Sierra 1500. Both 2WD and 4WD Yukon configurations have their own EPA fuel-economy estimates.

The Yukon XL also offers the 3.0L Duramax inline-six. Its extra name does not indicate a different diesel. The engine is the same LZ0, and its EPA estimates differ by 2WD or 4WD.

The GMC Sierra HD line includes the Sierra 2500 HD and Sierra 3500 HD. These heavy-duty pickups offer the 6.6L Duramax V8 with 470 horsepower, 975 lb-ft of torque, and an Allison 10-speed automatic. An available Power Take-Off transmission can also be paired with it.

The 3.0L Duramax in Detail

That combination of a light-duty application, published EPA estimates, and a configuration-specific towing maximum explains the 3.0L's role. It belongs on the shopping list when the chosen vehicle is a Sierra 1500, Yukon, or Yukon XL and the decision is whether diesel suits the job.

The 6.6L Duramax in Detail

The 6.6L Duramax L5P is the turbo-diesel V8 for the Sierra 2500 HD and Sierra 3500 HD. Its 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque put it in a different working category from the 3.0L inline-six. GMC pairs it with an Allison 10-speed automatic, and a Power Take-Off transmission is available.

No EPA fuel-economy figure is published for the 6.6L Duramax. The blank is not a missing Sierra HD estimate that should be borrowed from another truck. There is simply no EPA number to quote for this engine.

That means fuel-economy comparisons between the two Duramax engines cannot be made from matching EPA figures. The 3.0L has published estimates for each listed light-duty vehicle and drivetrain.
